Natural Health Care

Irritable Bowel Syndrome-
The most common gastrointestinal disorder with about 15% of the population
suffering from its symptoms of abdominal pain and distention, constipation
&/or diarrhea, gas, and sometimes nausea. It is very important to consult
with your health care provider to rule out other problems including diverticulosis,
bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel conditions, low or high thyroid levels
and malabsorption. The first line of treatment of IBS is increased dietary
fiber (see constipation). Eliminating
food allergens (mainly dairy products and grains) and sugar will help.
Stress is common in IBS patients and relaxation therapy, biofeedback, counseling
and exercise will help. Some IBS sufferers have depression,
anxiety or sleep problems
as well. Lactobacillus acidophilus supplements are also helpful.
Herb of choice-
Peppermint oil (enteric coated)- helpful to reduce intestinal
muscle spasms, and inhibit the growth of yeast in the bowel.
Enteric coated capsules containing 0.2-0.4 ml of peppermint oil- one
twice a day between meals.
