Sinusitis-

A bacterial infection of the sinuses. Acute sinusitis is characterized by nasal congestion and dicharge, fever, frontal headache, and pain & tenderness over the affected sinus. Viral upper respiratory infections and dental infections can predispose to acute sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis may have only a postnasal drip and is usually related to low immune function and allergies including pollens and foods. (see immune enhancement and hay fever).

Natural treatment of sinusitis includes local application of heat or alternating hot and cold, and supplements of vitamins C and A, betacarotene, bioflavonoids and zinc.

Herbs of choice-
Echinacea- Stimulates the immune system and is effective against a number of bacteria.
Liquid extract- 1/2- 1 teaspoon every 3-4 hours
Dry herb in capsules- 500-1000 mg every 3-4 hours
Standardized extract (3.5% echinacoside)- 150-300 mg every 3-4 hours

Goldenseal-Specific for infections of the mucous membranes, has broad antibacterial activity, and stimulates the immune system.
Liquid extract- 1/2-1 teaspoon every 3-4 hours
Dry herb in capsules- 500-1000 mg every 3-4 hours
Standardized extract (8-12% alkaloid content)- 250 mg every 3-4 hours

Other herbs- Osha, Garlic, Bromelain, Horseradish, Elder, Myrrh
