Headaches-
Headaches are a common problem, most are due to muscle
tension resulting from stress, some are migraines
or vascular headaches, a small percentage are due to serious medical problems
like tumors, infections and hemorrgages. Any new persistant headache, especially
if accompanied by symptoms such as one sided weakness, visual changes,
mental changes, nausea & vomiting, fever, high blood pressure, eye
or ear pain, or with a history of head trauma should be evaluated right
away by your health care provider. Chronic headaches of tension
or migraine type can be debilitating and even
lead to additional problems like depression.
Interestingly, several studies have shown that regular consumption of analgesic
medications may actually result in more headaches.
Herbal treatment-
Feverfew- an effective
preventative treatment for migraine, works
by inhibiting release of blood vessel dilating substances, inhibiting inflammatory
substances and stablilizing blood vessel tone. Its effectiveness appears
to be due to the constituent, parthenolide.
Liquid extract -1-11/2 teaspoons three times a day
Dry herb in capsules- 1000-1500 mg three times a day
Standardized extract (0.6% parthenolide)- 100 mg three times a day
Other herbs-Ginger, garlic,
St.
Johnís Wort
